Governor’s Roses Prepped for Garden Party with BuffaLoam

August 21, 2011 — Colorado food and wine producers, as part of Colorado Proud, are preparing for the Garden Party at the Governor’s Residence on the evening of August 25. It’s an annual event open to the public, which this year spotlights the importance of agriculture, a $20 billion-plus industry, to Colorado’s people and economy.

The Governor’s Residence gardens are preparing as well. Last week, volunteers applied a generous helping of BuffaLoam, a unique, organic plant food produced by a large bison ranch in Northern Colorado, to the rose beds at the historic Boettcher Mansion on 8th Street in Denver.

This year, the Governor’s Residence Preservation Fund, in conjunction with the Governor and the Colorado Department of Agriculture, are hosting the Garden Party to celebrate Colorado’s harvest. Food and wines of the state are highlighted. The party is open to the public but attendance is limited. To buy tickets or learn more, go to http://www.coloradoshome.org/

The Viki and Jack Thompson Gardens at the Governor’s Residence are maintained primarily by volunteers. The rose beds are watered through an underground cable system and a sprinkler system serves roses surrounding the fountain. Fabric weed barriers topped with bark mulch surround the roses, which are all hardy varieties.

At the Governor’s Residence, BuffaLoam plant food compost tea was applied directly to the mulch where it will mix with the earth gradually, aided by rain and sun. Never harsh or burning, BuffaLoam is composted for a year at the Diamond Tail Ranch near Glendevey, Colorado. It is clean, loamy and has a neutral aroma. The compost tea is easily sifted onto the soil or steeped with water to apply to soil. BuffaLoam is sold locally at Whole Foods, Vitamin Cottage Natural Grocers and select gardening stores.

BuffaLoam is a unique product spanning the food production, agriculture, gardening, and sustainable environmental industries. The Duncan family, owners of Diamond Tail Ranch, started the BuffaLoam business with a desire to replenish bison stocks and develop products that are nutritious both to people and plants, environmentally conscious, sustainable, and organic. Diamond Tail Ranch also partners with Rocky Mountain Natural Meats of Henderson, Colorado, to produce the Great Range brand of bison meat products. Rocky Mountain is the nation’s largest supplier of bison meat to retail outlets and restaurants.
